  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from H. Harris -- Love it : I love the story and the author but the book itself is very strange. It's as if it was interpreted by a machine from the original handwriting, because the wrong letters look similar to what the letter should have been. "Boon" instead of "soon" for example. There are tons of misspelled words- on almost every page. In one line, while on horseback, the author says "I was so scared I nearly lost my scat". I assume it was supposed to be "lost my seat", although that one did give me a chuckle. :) There are no page numbers except occasionally and they are in weird places, like in the middle of a sentence in the second paragraph. Never received a book like it before. Very distracting and I would not have purchased this copy had I known. I will still give it 5 stars for the story though, it's from a different perspective than others from this time period usually are. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Bill Staley -- Robotic narration, but a great story : The story is fabulous. Steven Ambrose recommends the book in his book on George Custer and Crazy Horse. The Ambrose book is a great companion to his one. My wife, who did not read the Ambrose book, enjoyed Elizabeth Custer's book. However, if you can find it read by another narrator, get that one. This narrator is a human who tries to read like a robot. it might be that she sees her audience as young kids. We upped the speed to 125% of normal, because she read so slowly and deliberately. The narrator does vary her tone to suit the subject, but not nearly enough. With all that said, I am grateful that this narrator, who might not be a professional, undertook and completed the project of narrating Elizabeth Custers' story. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from thomas c. hancock -- Libby Custer and the settling of the Northern plains. : I am so thankful to have found this book by Libby Custer. It was very well written and gives the reader an unforgettable look into frontier life of the northern plains. I feel she wrote what she saw and felt. It is a story of immense importance and really should be read by everyone who is interested in the incredible sadness of Indian affairs and a time in the history of America. Written in vivid detail, I can't recommend highly enough. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James E. -- An insider's view of George Armstrong Custer : This book by Elizabeth Bacon Custer is biased by her undying admiration and love for her husband, the famous cavalryman. However, it offers a unique and intimate view of day-to-day camp and garrison life in the few years leading up to the Battle of Little Big Horn. She was well educated for that era, and a capable writer. The book also includes excerpts of some of Colonel Custer's last letters. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Joe O -- The real Custer? : Very interesting reading. Told from the perspective of Custer's wife. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from FR -- Just ok : Not as interesting as y thought it would be. Quit about half way in. Obviously, not an objective writer, but a bit was interesting. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from CriminalJusticeteacherdotcom -- "Rose Colored Glasses' AND "Little Life on the Priairie" : Althought the opinions of Custer and life with the calvary are viewed through (very) rosy glasses, Mrs. G.A. Custer is a witty and prolific writer. She also gives little-known insight into everyday happenings in life on the prairie and how women survived the journey. Particularly interesting are the dynamics of relationships between women when living literally in the middle of nowhere, surviving the harshest of climates, with few friends, the same friends, for extended times. Also interesting is the relationship between people of color and the white soldiers. Custer is an enigma, and readers should read this book but also others ("Son of the Morning Star" is the best thus far) to get a glimpse at the man. Libby Custer falls into poetic verse at times, but this can be refreshing - there are not many writings of women in these times available. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2001 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from NealOst -- Insights into those times and personalities - good read : Excellent book - interesting read and insights into what happened on the home front and camp during those times. Also, frank views from her give great insights into the general norms and thinking of the day. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from john -- taking you back in time : Great read.Though in many ways obviously bias in the favour of her husband this book still gives an marvellous insight into how it was on the frontier. You ll read stories youd be unlikely to find anywhere else.Written near 130 years ago the style of writing takes a bit of getting used to but its worth the read.I dont think i have any dislikes of the book. The paper and excellent quality of the book itself is worth a mention to. Its probably the heaviest paperback of its size ive ever picked up,Unlike so many paperbacks you get nowadays this is a quality product well made. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 14, 2013 )
